MindHabits' Happy Games Paired with Pharrell William's "Happy" Music!

We all could use more smiling people and happy music!

If you are looking for a short burst of happiness, try playing the free MindHabits demo games. I recommend the Matrix Trainer for starters. You can uncheck the "email" box if you don't want to sign up for the newsletter.

The games have upbeat music playing in the background, but you can listen to your own music. In the Matrix game, the objective is to tap as many happy faces that you can find, out of a number of frowny or sad faces.   The research shows that this is an effective way of reducing stress.  I have used the on-line version for years with students who have autism, and it is a fun and effective way of "training" them to focus on facial features and expressions.

The desktop version of the suite of games is just under $20.00, and is available for Windows and Macs.   The desktop version tracks data and and allows users to customize the games with their own photos.   

I am about to explore MindHabit's new mobile apps: Psych Me Up PRO! and Happy Cat! 

If you work with young people - special needs or otherwise, try playing the on-line demo with Pharrell William's "Happy" song in the background (see music video embedded below). 

 This is something that wouldn't hurt to try at home!

I am sharing information about MindHabits because I have been following this company since 2005, when Dr. Mark Baldwin, the lead creator of the suite of games, gave a presentation.   Dr. Baldwin is a psychology professor at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He has devoted his career to the study of social intelligence, and more recently, how technology can help people reduce stress, build self-confidence, and development, and maintain positive states of mind.



According to the MindHabits website, the Psych Me Up Pro!   ($.99) and PsychMeUp! (free) mobile apps were developed to help people focus attention on positive social feedback. A quiz is included with the application, as well as information about the research that supports the use of the games.  The "pro" version has more options.

The children's version of PsychMeUp! is Happy Cat.  The objective is to find the happy cats and ignore the grumpy cats.  The smiling cat will meow.

Monkeying Around with Autism Assessments: Kinect-based game by Vectorform and Kaiser Permanente therapists offers a barrel of possibilities!

I recently had the chance to visit the team at Vectorform's Royal Oak (MI) headquarters and experience a demo of one of their newest applications, a Kinect-based game developed to assist in the assessment of children with autism. The game, known as Monkey Business, was designed in collaboration with physical, occupational, and speech therapists from Kaiser Permanente, a large health care service provider in California. The project was supported by Kaiser Permanente's Innovation Fund for Technology group.

I was impressed!

As I watched the demo, it was clear that much time and attention was given to the input of the therapists at Kaiser Permanente. The avatar in the game is a friendly monkey who embodies the mannerisms of a friendly, curious child.  The artwork is visually appealing and not too busy. The sound effects relate to the interaction at hand and provide feedback to the child as they engage in various game-like tasks designed to assess visual-motor, gross motor, and basic receptive language skills.  Another good feature of this application is the simplicity of the screens designed for input of the child's information and viewing data regarding progress.

In my opinion, the Monkey Business assessment game has the potential for use in school settings, and would be enhanced if additional assessment activities are provided in the application.  Expanded activities within the Monkey Business environment could support a range of treatment, education, and related intervention efforts. In addition to supporting assessment and intervention of children with autism, the Monkey Business concept would be especially useful in working with children who have experienced a traumatic brain injury.


Below are screen shots and descriptions of a few activities from the Monkey Business game:

Lily Pad Jumping Test
In the jumping test, the child is asked to jump across a pond, from one lily pad to another.  The child is provided with a set of toy lily pads on the floor.  As the child jumps, the Kinect sensor picks up movement and displays the jumps on the screen in the form of the monkey.























Balance Beam Test
The following screen shot depicts the monkey avatar crossing a stream on a balance beam. The monkey's movements reflect the child's movements across a real balance beam in front of the Kinect sensor and a large screen display.






















Block Building Test
In the block building test, the monkey avatar encourages the child to build a tower of blocks to match the one displayed on the large screen.  The child uses real blocks, placed on a table, to build a tower while the monkey provides encouragements.  Objects other than blocks can be used, as the Kinect sensor is capable of identifying a variety of objects that can be use for building and stacking.

The screens designed for inputting and reviewing data regarding the child are designed with simplicity and ease-of use in mind, as shown in the pictures below:












































In the present version of Monkey Business, a TV remote is used to control the application. It is possible that future versions of Monkey Business could integrated with a Smartwatch to input student information and control the activities in the application.  


Comment: As a school psychologist who works with children, teens, and young adults with autism and other significant disabilities, I know how difficult it can be to conduct assessments using traditional test materials.  If a student has difficulty interacting with unfamiliar adults, has communication challenges, or has motor difficulties, it may not be possible to administer an assessment that generates meaningful or valid results.  Even if the student is capable of completing some of the traditional test tasks, much time and effort is required on the part of the evaluator to sustain their interest, effort, and attention.   

To get a better picture of a student's emerging skills, I use interactive multimedia applications during my assessments of children with autism.  Newer technologies such as interactive whiteboards, larger touch-screen monitors, and tablets have proven to be useful tools in assessment.   A significant drawback to my approach is that it is cobbled together and might be difficult to replicate by other evaluation teams.  I see a growing need for a range of technologically-enhanced tools for assessment, including applications that offer opportunities for playful engagement.  Monkey Business holds potential to fill the bill.

What next?

I'd like to share some stories about the people who make things come to life at Vectorform. During my visit, I learned that they are involved in a number of projects related to health care and are always brainstorming new ways to harness technology for their various clients.  

Over the past several years, I've followed Vectorform's journey as they've jumped off of the desktop and transformed from web-developers to Post-WIMP explorers of natural user interfaces and interaction.  The most recent area of exploration is Google Glass. 

Intrigued by Google Glass?  So am I.  

During my visit to Vectorform, I had a chance to see the world - or rather Vectorform's basement conference room - through Google Glass.  As soon as I put them on I was flooded with ideas, and will expand on my ideas, and those of others, in future posts.

Septris: A game to teach about Sepsis, plus resources and links

 According to a fact sheet from the Global Sepsis Alliance, sepsis "remains the primary cause of death from infection despite advances in modern medicine, including vaccines, antibiotics, and intensive care.  Sepsis, which is often misunderstood by the public as "blood-poisoning", is one of the leading cause of death around the world.  Sepsis arises when the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs.  It may lead to shock, multiple organ failure, and death, especially if not recognized early and treated promptly.  Between on third and one half of patients with sepsis die...


...Rapid initiation of simple, timely interventions, including antimicrobials and intravenous fluids can halve the risk of dying. Patients with suspected sepsis should be referred immediately to an appropriate facility...Unfortunately, sepsis is still mostly overlooked and recognized too late"

Note:  Sepsis Awareness is now one of my "causes".  The first World Sepsis Day is September 13, 2012 and I plan to share information about this global health concern from time-to-time, and related to technology in some way.


Below is a picture of my 24-year-old daughter, her husband, and son on Friday, March 31, 2012.   At the time this picture was taken, she felt fine and had just walked about a mile and a half or so on a family stroll. She was in perfect health.  She woke up in the wee hours of April 1st with the signs of an infection, took something for her aches and pains, and went back to bed.



The next day, things were much worse. She didn't know it at the time, but her blood pressure was falling and the signs of sepsis were appearing.  Time was wasted going to an urgent care clinic. Fortunately she was referred to the E.R, where her her symptoms were identified.  She received excellent treatment at Matthews Presbyterian Hospital.  It took several days until she was stable, and she was hospitalized for one week.  Unlike many people who experience sepsis, she did not suffer tissue damage or shutdown of her organs. Her treatment was initiated early enough to prevent this from happening.

My daughter is doing much better, but she experienced a great deal of fatigue for several weeks following her hospitalization


I recently came across an article written in the New York Times, by Jim Dwyer, about Rory Staunton, a 12-year-old boy who died from a strep infection that resulted in a sepsis crisis that went untreated.  Unlike my daughter, Rory was discharged from the ER instead of being admitted for the intensive treatment that my daughter received. When his parents took him back to the hospital, it was too late. He died on April 1, 2012.  My daughter battling sepsis in the hospital in North Carolina on the very same day.


Although I am not a physician, I am sure that Rory's death could have been prevented, based on information in the article as well as information shared by Rory's parents on their website.

Rory's sepsis crisis was the result of toxic shock from a Strep A infection.  Sepsis can also be the result of other types of infections. The main thing to know that  is that once sepsis sets in, the patient requires immediate and intensive treatment, guided by an infectious disease specialist.

Today I hooked up a Wii to the IWB in the school's therapy room. Next - a Kinect?! (Angels are welcome to help us expand the school's "games" programs for students with special needs)



Today, I hooked up our school's Wii to the newly-installed IWB in the therapy room for the first time, and used it during a session for for a social-skills activity with two students who have autism spectrum disorders.  The students helped each other to create their own "Mii" avatars.  I had them play the bowling game, and was impressed how this activity elicited social conversation between the students, with minimal effort on my part.

Most of students in the program at Wolfe are in grades 6-12. They have cognitive, language, and motor delays.  A good number of the students also have autism spectrum disorders. Some have multiple special needs.

We have found that when our students are provided with interactive activities displayed on the large screen of an IWB, they tend to increase their level of attention to their peers and also communicate more with one-another, as well as with the teachers and staff.

By using an IWB for games at school, we are extending the reach of how this technology can be used with students who have more complex special needs.   By providing a means  for our students to learn to play positive games, we help them develop important physical, social, and leisure skills that they can use outside the school setting with non-disabled peers and siblings.  My hunch is that the games will also help promote cognitive/problem solving skills, too.

NOTE:
The funds to purchase the Wii were donated to our school, but did not cover additional games or accessories. We'd like to purchase Rock Band and Wii Fit. We'd also like to expand our program and purchase an Xbox with a Kinect.   An iPad or two would be OK, too : )

Wii Just Dance2 and Kinect Dance Central: UI and Usability Approaches; Challenges for Developing Accessible Games (revised)

I love to dance- I studied dance through college, and off and on as an adult.   I have a DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) game-floor pad somewhere in my attic gathering dust.  I'm ready for new challenges.


I'm planning on buying a couple new dance games for the Wii and the Kinect. There is more to this story, given my interest off-the-desktop, post-WIMP HCI (human-computer interaction), interactive multimedia and games, and a career as a school psychologist dedicated to young people with disabilities, I'm excited to see where new technologies, interfaces, and interactions will take us.


So what do the wise men of usability have to say about new ways of interacting with games and other applications?


"Kinect has many great design elements that clearly show that the team (a) knows usability, (b) did user testing, and (c) had management support to prioritize usability improvements, even when they required extra development work." -Jakob Nielsen


Jakob Nielsen, one of the godfathers of usability,  shared a few words of wisdom about the Kinect in his 12/27/10 Alertbox post: Kinect Gestural UI: First Impressions.  Although he did not review Dance Central, he concludes that the game he reviewed, Kinect Adventures, was fun to play, despite usability problems.

Why is this topic important to me?
I have been involved in the Games for Health and Game Accessibility movement for many years.  Lately I've been exploring the OpenKinect project with an aim to create ways of making movement-oriented games accessible for young people with more complex disabilities.  For example, there is a need to have dance and movement games modified for students (and adults!) who need wheelchairs or walkers.  There are students who have milder mobility challenges who love to dance, and the current games don't address their needs.  Some of my students have vision or hearing impairments, too.  They deserve a chance to play things designed for the Kinect.

"OpenKinect is an open community of people interested in making use of the amazing Xbox Kinect hardware with our PCs and other devices. We are working on free, open source libraries that will enable the Kinect to be used with Windows, Linux, and Mac."

Note:  I currently work as a school psychologist with students up to age 22. My main office is adjacent to a large OT and PT room at Wolfe, a program for students who have special needs.   We just had a large interactive whiteboard installed in the room that is begging for us to connect it with the school's Wii,  and soon (we hope), a Kinect.   If we are going to use dance games to help promote healthy activities among our special students, the games need to be accessible for students with cognitive, motor, and other limitations.

FIRST STEPS
Although I can dance, I understand what the world is like through the eyes of many of the young people I work with who have motor coordination and sensory integration problems that interfere with their ability to  move and dance, let alone access fast-paced dance games on the Wii or Kinect. 


My initial plan is to look at what the new dance games might be like from the view of someone who doesn't know how to dance, and admits that they have "two left feet" - an perhaps, no sense of rhythm.  Where would I start?


Wii's Just Dance2 seems to offer some support for learning how to dance through the use of simple movement icons, in the form of outlined figures, that provide information about how to move with the dancer on the screen. As you can see from the video below, the gamer is provided with information about upcoming moves throughout the game.


I decided to take a look at Just Dance2's  MIKA "Big Girl" (You Are Beautiful) because some of the adolescent females I work with have weight concerns that interfere with their health. During the teen years, this can become a vicious cycle, resulting  in less movement, and less participation with peers in physical activities, such as playing dance games.  If a teen has depression as part of this mix, we know that exercise can help,  and a fun dance game might be a life-saver, in more ways than one.

I thought it would be useful to learn more about the story behind the making of JustDance2.
At 2:22, Alexia, the project's usability expert, makes her presence known. From what I can tell, she focused on aspects of the game that would make it more usable for non-dancers, including those with "two left feet", to play the game.  (I don't know if there was anyone consulted about accessibility concerns for the game.)


Kinect Dance Central
Dance Central uses a different approach when it comes to "teaching" people how to dance along through the game. It would be interesting to test out Dance Central and JustDance 2 with the same set of people to get a better feel for what works and what doesn't.  Below is a video that previews, in split-screen, the interaction that takes place in Dance Central:

In Dance Central, gamers are provided with information about the moves through icons that cycle up the right hand side of the screen.  The level of dance-coordination to keep up with the moves is challenging at times, even for people who are OK at dancing.  Players can select dances according to level of difficulty. 


Kinect Usability with Regular People

Steve Cable (CX Partmers) shared his team's look at usability issues related to the Kinect by testing several games, including Dance Central, with groups of people in his article, "Designing for XBox Kinect - a usability study".  The quote below is from the Steve's article:

"We’ve loved playing with the Kinect. There’s no doubt that the game play is lots of fun. In-game menus are a barrier to that fun. Kinect should allow players to move through menus quickly and compensate for inaccuracy.

We felt the Kinect would benefit from some standardised global controls – much like a controller uses the A button to select and the B button to move backwards. We also think it needs a more responsive pause gesture – one that doesn’t interfere with the user’s game play.

Most of our participants found the Dance Central menu to be more effective, more efficient and more satisfying to use. Here are our recommendations for designing a Kinect menu interface:
  1. Allow users to make selections through positive gestures, rather than timed positions
  2. Place options on a single axis to make them easier and quicker to select
  3. Allow users to control menus with the game pad if they prefer
  4. Use large easy to read text
  5. Don’t make users scroll through options unnecessarily – it takes too long
  6. Users will be distracted if used in a social setting – test your menus in a social context to see if they are prone to errors
  7. Avoid the cursor metaphor, it’s not what gamers are used to seeing in game menus, and makes it harder to implement alternative joypad controls"
