Had fun reading both posts. This is a good lesson in how UX is influenced by context and the user themselves. There is probably no objectively best detergent container, but there *are* things that can be improved on that Gain container style, some of which 'ALL' has identified.

Ben,

You are right. The context is important, along with the user's preferences not only for the type of detergent they use but how they do their laundry. For example, some people, like me, use the shelf above the washer and dryer for hangers and hanging up some of the laundry. I've lived in three homes that came with higher wire shelves in the laundry room, and I simply assumed that I should use it for hangers and laundry. But a shelf that high up isn't the best place for the Gain container style.

One commenter has a shelf just at the level above the washing machine where the detergent can be dispensed at just the right measure on a count of 5, without the need for even using the cap.

That works well for him, but it wouldn't work for me, since I need a higher shelf for hanging some of my laundry on hangers. I'm a creature of this habit, but I'm not wedded to it. For example, I sometimes use my bed for folding and hanging laundry, because I can turn on the bedroom TV to keep me entertained at the same time.
