"Hi, Google. My name is Johnny" Johnny Chung Lee leaves Microsoft. (I still wish I could be Johnny Chung Lee for a day.)
"Hi, Google. My name is Johnny" Johnny Chung Lee announced on his Procrastineering blog that he's accepted a position at Google as a "Rapid Evaluator". I'm not sure what he will be doing in this position, but his title is intriguing!
Here are some of my previous posts devoted to the work of Johnny Chung Lee:

Get Up and Move Without Gear! Xbox Natal, a "smart" gaming environment.
I'm waiting for Xbox Natal to cross my path. Microsoft, can you hear me?
(I meant to write about this a while ago.)
Here are facts 5-6 out of 12, from "Project Natal in Detail" post on the XBox website:

Here are facts 5-6 out of 12, from "Project Natal in Detail" post on the XBox website:
- "Fact #5: In addition to “Project Natal” tracking your full body movement in 3-D, it also recognises your face and facial expressions. It can even detect the change of emotion in your voice. Three facts in one – yummy."
- "Fact #6: “Project Natal” remembers your face and voice so that you can connect to Xbox LIVE without the need to reach for a controller. This is the future!"
- "Fact #7: “Project Natal” is the world’s first system to combine an RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone and custom processor running proprietary software. Memorise this sentence then say it out loud faster and faster."

Multi-touch Virtual Poker?!
Andrew Milner, of Perth, Australia, recently developed the Hold'Em 1000 Virtual Poker Table. The system provide video streaming of all players, and tracks every player action. Take a look at the video:
I don't play poker, so I don't really know if it would be more exciting to play the virtual version of the game. I don't have the $20,000.00 on hand to find out, but I am sure that this table would be well-received at high-end club that serves the rich, trendy, and famous.

3DV Systems Motion Sensing Camera and Microsoft's Xbox 360
A while ago there was an article in Reuters that discussed how Microsoft was planning to buy 3DV Systems, a company that develops virtual reality imaging technology for digital cameras, called ZCams. The ZCams would be used as an accessory to the XBox 360 system.
It is true, according to a recent article in Business Week:
Microsoft Moves onto Nintendo's Motion Turf: "The software giant's Xbox 360 gaming console will have a camera system that lets users bring body movements and voice commands into play"
Information about the camera from the 3DV website:
"The new"ZCamTM (previously Z-Sense), 3DV's most recently completed prototype camera, is based on DeepCTM and is the company's smallest and most cost-effective 3D camera. At the size of a standard webcam and at affordable cost, it provides very accurate depth information at high speed (60 frames per second) and high depth resolution (1-2 cm). At the same time, it provides synchronized and synthesized quality color (RGB) video (at 1.3 M-Pixel). With these specifications, the new ZCamTM (previously Z-Sense) is ideal for PC-based gaming and for background replacement in web-conferencing. Game developers, web-conferencing service providers and gaming enthusiasts interested in the new ZCamTM (previously Z-Sense) are invited to contact us."

V12's Dual-Touch-screen Canova: Multi-touch could support applications for universal design, education, and assistive technology.
V12 Design is a company with offices in Italy and Australia. It is developing the second-generation version of Canova . Since the product will not be on the market for at least 16 months, no pictures of the newest version were available. The first version is depicted in the photos below:
Canova Generation 1#

(Photo via Gizmodo; depicts the first version of the dual LCD laptop.)
According to information from LaptopMag, Conova was..The first-generation model....was envisioned to transform from a sketch pad, to a writing pad with an electronic pen, to a newspaper."

From the Gizmodo AU website:
"An interview with Valerio Cometti, the founder and managing director of V12 Design, confirmed that the upcoming version would support multitouch input and that a microphone would be built into the design for voice commands."
With multi-touch and audio input, this device would be a godsend for young people with learning difficulties and others who require assistive technology. It would also be very useful for people in various fields of work. I assume that the Canova will come with speakers, a DVD player, a video camera, Blue-tooth and Wi-Fi capabilities.
I was excited about the new dual-touch screen laptops in development for the One Laptop Per Child project. I'm even more excited about the Canova. Hopefully, the company is devoting attention to usability studies with a wide range of people, using a variety of interactive demo applications.
I wonder if I can get my hands on a second-generation prototype of Canova to test out my touch-screen application "experiments". I'm bursting with ideas to try out, including gaming applications.
I want one now!
The second version will be developed by a US manufacturer. If anyone knows more about this leave a comment!

Cross Post: One Laptop Per Child's Redesign- Dual Touchscreens, Flexibile Use

"Hundred-dollar laptop, revisited: The next-generation version of the One Laptop per Child machine will dispense with keypads. It can be folded flat to make one larger screen (left); here, two children could play a game, each using the touch-screen capability. Or it can be held on its side and used as an electronic book (right)."
I'm impressed with the new design of the OLPC, the dual touch screen, the support of collaboration and sharing between children, and the flexibility it will provide educators and students. It can even be used as an e-Book! This laptop would be welcomed in UDL classrooms.
For detailed information about the new OLPC laptop, which has not yet been released, read David Talbot's article in the MIT Technology Review.
I want one.
